As a General Farm Worker – Harvesting at Sewa Enterprise Ltd., you will play a vital role in our seasonal production cycle, working across both greenhouse and field environments to harvest, handle, and prepare crops for market distribution. This is a hands-on, physically active position that places you at the centre of our farm’s daily operations. You will work under the supervision of experienced farm managers and greenhouse supervisors who will provide ongoing training and support.
Your work will involve a mix of greenhouse duties, including tending to hydroponic and soil-grown vegetable crops, and field harvesting activities during peak outdoor growing seasons. Key Responsibilities
- Greenhouse Harvesting: Hand-harvest tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and leafy greens from greenhouse growing systems, ensuring produce is picked at optimal ripeness and quality
- Field Crop Harvesting: Participate in outdoor harvesting of seasonal vegetables and berries, adapting techniques to different crop types and weather conditions
- Sorting & Grading: Inspect harvested produce for size, colour, firmness, and defects; sort items into premium, standard, and processing grades according to buyer specifications
- Packing & Labeling: Carefully pack graded produce into crates, boxes, clamshells, and bulk containers; apply correct labels and ensure packaging meets food safety standards
- Plant Care & Maintenance: Assist with pruning, de-leafing, trellising, and staking of greenhouse plants to promote healthy growth and maximize yield
- Irrigation Monitoring: Check drip irrigation lines, overhead sprinklers, and fertigation systems; report leaks, clogs, or dry zones to supervisors
- Pest & Disease Scouting: Identify and report signs of insect infestations, fungal diseases, or nutrient deficiencies in crops for prompt treatment
- Greenhouse Climate Control: Assist with opening and closing vents, adjusting shade curtains, and monitoring temperature and humidity levels
- Sanitation & Cleaning: Maintain clean work areas, sanitize harvesting tools, and follow biosecurity protocols to prevent contamination and disease spread
- Loading & Transport: Move packed produce from fields and greenhouses to cold storage areas and loading docks using carts, pallet jacks, and wheelbarrows
- Record Keeping: Accurately record daily harvest quantities, crop conditions, and any issues observed for farm management review
- Safety Compliance: Follow all farm safety procedures, wear required personal protective equipment, and participate in regular safety training sessions
Qualifications & Skills
Required
- Good physical condition with stamina for standing, bending, lifting, and repetitive tasks
- Ability to work in warm, humid greenhouse environments and variable outdoor weather
- Basic English language skills for understanding instructions and safety communications
- Capacity to lift and carry up to 25 kg (55 lbs) on a regular basis
- Manual dexterity for delicate handling of fresh produce without bruising or damage
- Reliable attendance and punctuality with a positive, cooperative work attitude
- Valid work authorization for Canada or eligibility for TFWP visa sponsorship
Preferred
- Previous experience in greenhouse operations, field farming, or produce handling
- Familiarity with hydroponic growing systems or controlled environment agriculture
- Knowledge of vegetable varieties and harvest timing indicators
- Experience operating farm equipment such as pallet jacks, carts, or small tractors
- Food Safe certification or willingness to complete training
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Ability to work flexible shifts including early mornings and weekends during peak periods
