Frequently Asked Questions

How much cattle experience do I need for this role?
We require a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience working with cattle in a professional farm or ranch environment. This experience should include daily herd care, feeding, health monitoring, and basic handling procedures. Experience with beef cattle is preferred, but dairy or mixed-operation backgrounds are also valuable. We assess practical skills during the farm visit interview.
Can international workers apply for this position?
Yes, we actively recruit internationally. Sumas Mountain Farms holds a valid LMIA and participates in Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program. We sponsor work permits for qualified candidates from around the world. Our team includes herdspersons from New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and Mexico. We provide comprehensive immigration support including LMIA documentation, work permit guidance, and settlement assistance upon arrival.
What is the on-farm accommodation like?
We provide free private accommodation in fully furnished cabins or rooms within the farmhouse. Each unit includes a bedroom, private or shared bathroom, kitchen facilities, heating, electricity, and internet access. Accommodation is located on the farm property, allowing you to live where you work and respond quickly to any herd emergencies. Utilities are fully covered by the employer. Laundry facilities and parking are also provided.
What does a typical workday look like?
A typical day starts at 6:00 AM with morning herd checks and feeding. Mid-morning involves pasture rotation, fence repairs, or facility maintenance. Afternoon tasks include health treatments, record keeping, and equipment servicing. Evening checks ensure all cattle are secure and accounted for before dark. During calving season (February-April), night checks may be required on a rotating schedule. The work is physically active and outdoors, with seasonal variations in intensity.
Is this a year-round position or seasonal?
This is a permanent, year-round full-time position. Unlike seasonal harvest work, cattle herding requires consistent care throughout all seasons. We need herdspersons who are committed to long-term employment and willing to live on the farm year-round. The work varies by season, spring and autumn being the busiest, but there are always daily responsibilities regardless of the time of year.
What machinery will I be expected to operate?
Herdspersons operate a range of equipment including tractors with loaders, ATVs, feed wagons, hay balers, mowers, and fencing tools. We provide thorough training on all machinery specific to our operation. A valid driver’s license is required, and experience with heavy equipment is a significant asset. Safety training and certification for machinery operation are provided and mandatory before independent use.
How long does the hiring process take?
For Canadian residents, the process takes 2-3 weeks including application review, interview, farm visit, and offer. For international candidates, expect 6-10 weeks to allow for LMIA processing, work permit application through IRCC, and travel arrangements. We maintain open communication throughout and provide regular updates to all applicants.
Are there opportunities for career advancement?
Definitely. We believe in promoting from within. Herdspersons who demonstrate leadership, initiative, and strong performance can advance to Senior Herdsperson, Assistant Farm Manager, and eventually Farm Manager roles. We also support specialization in areas such as breeding programs, pasture management, or livestock nutrition. Professional development funding is available for relevant courses and certifications.
What is the nearest town and what amenities are available?
The farm is 15 minutes from downtown Abbotsford, a city of 150,000 people with full amenities including Abbotsford Regional Hospital, University of the Fraser Valley, shopping malls, restaurants, recreation centres, and the Abbotsford International Airport. Vancouver is 45 minutes west via Highway 1. The farm itself is in a rural mountain setting, offering peace and privacy while remaining accessible to urban conveniences.
