Frequently Asked Questions

How much dairy experience is required for this position?
We require a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience working in commercial dairy operations. This should include direct experience with milking procedures, cow handling, and herd health monitoring. Experience with larger herds (200+ cows) and modern milking parlours is highly valued. We assess both theoretical knowledge and practical skills during the farm visit interview.
Do you hire international workers through the TFWP?
Yes, we actively recruit internationally. Peeters Farms Ltd. holds a valid LMIA and regularly sponsors skilled dairy workers through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. We have successfully brought herdspersons from the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and Mexico. We provide complete immigration support including LMIA documentation, work permit guidance, and settlement assistance upon arrival in Alberta.
What are the milking hours and daily schedule?
Our cows are milked twice daily at 5:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Herdspersons typically arrive at 4:30 AM for morning prep and finish evening duties by 7:00 PM. Between milkings, the day includes herd health checks, feeding, calf care, record keeping, and facility maintenance. The schedule runs 6 days per week with one rotating day off. During peak periods such as calving season, additional hours may be required and are compensated as overtime.
What type of accommodation is provided?
We provide free private accommodation in a modern, well-maintained farm house located on the property. Each herdsperson receives a private furnished bedroom with access to shared kitchen, living room, bathroom, and laundry facilities. The house includes high-speed internet, satellite TV, and all utilities paid by the employer. Living on-farm allows quick response to emergencies and eliminates commuting time. The accommodation is comfortable, clean, and designed to help workers rest and recharge between demanding shifts.
What milking system does the farm use?
We operate a double-12 parallel milking parlour with automatic take-offs, milk meters, and crowd gates. The parlour can milk 24 cows simultaneously with an average throughput of 120 cows per hour. We also utilize electronic herd management systems including activity monitors for heat detection, automatic sort gates, and DairyComp 305 software for record keeping. Training on our specific equipment is provided, but familiarity with modern parlour systems is a significant advantage.
What is the herd size and breed?
We milk approximately 300 Holstein cows with a rolling herd average of 11,500 kg of milk per lactation. The herd is primarily purebred Holstein with exceptional genetic merit. We maintain a young, productive herd with an average age of 3.5 lactations. Our reproduction program emphasizes high-quality AI genetics from leading sires. The herd is housed in a free-stall barn with sand bedding and excellent ventilation, ensuring cow comfort and welfare.
How long does the hiring process take?
For Canadian residents, the process typically takes 2-3 weeks from application to offer. For international candidates, expect 6-10 weeks to accommodate LMIA processing, work permit application through IRCC, and travel arrangements. We prioritize transparency and maintain regular contact with all applicants throughout the process. We understand the urgency for both local and international candidates and work diligently to move qualified applicants forward quickly.
Are there advancement opportunities at Peeters Farms?
Absolutely. We believe in growing our team from within. Herdspersons who demonstrate leadership, technical excellence, and commitment can advance to Senior Herdsperson, Assistant Herd Manager, and Herd Manager positions. We also support specialization in areas such as reproduction management, nutrition, or youngstock development. Professional development funding is available for courses and certifications that enhance your skills and value to the operation.
