Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous swine experience to apply?
No, previous swine experience is not mandatory. While experience with pigs or other livestock is beneficial, we provide comprehensive training for motivated candidates who are new to the industry. What matters most is your willingness to learn, strong work ethic, and genuine care for animal welfare. Many of our current herdspersons started with no prior swine experience and have built successful careers through our training programs.
What does “LMIA Requested” mean for international applicants?
LMIA Requested means Sunterra Farms Ltd. is actively seeking a Labour Market Impact Assessment from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) for this position. Once approved, the LMIA allows us to hire foreign workers through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. As an international applicant, you would need a valid job offer supported by an approved LMIA to apply for a Canadian work permit. We handle the entire LMIA application process and guide you through the work permit submission.
Can international workers apply before the LMIA is approved?
Yes, you can apply now. We encourage international candidates to submit applications immediately. We review all applications and conduct interviews in parallel with the LMIA application process. Once the LMIA is approved, we can quickly move forward with job offers and work permit applications for pre-qualified candidates. Applying early ensures you are at the front of the queue when LMIA approval is received.
What is the accommodation like?
We provide clean, comfortable on-farm housing at no cost to employees. Accommodation consists of private furnished bedrooms in a shared residence with modern kitchen facilities, bathrooms, laundry machines, and high-speed internet. The housing is located on or immediately adjacent to the farm property, eliminating commuting time and allowing quick response to barn emergencies. Utilities including electricity, water, heating, and internet are fully covered by the employer.
What are the typical working hours and shifts?
Swine production requires 7-day-per-week coverage with rotating shifts. Typical schedules include early morning shifts (6:00 AM – 2:00 PM), afternoon shifts (2:00 PM – 10:00 PM), and occasional night shifts during farrowing peaks. Workers average 44-50 hours per week. Days off rotate among team members to ensure continuous animal care. During farrowing season, additional hours may be required and are compensated as overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate.
Is the work physically demanding?
Yes, swine herding is physically active work. Tasks involve standing for long periods, walking through barns, lifting feed bags and piglets (up to 25 kg), bending, kneeling, and working in warm, humid barn environments. However, our modern facilities are designed with worker ergonomics in mind, including raised farrowing crates, automated feeding systems, and efficient layouts that minimize unnecessary physical strain. Workers naturally build stamina and strength within the first few weeks.
How is the wage determined within the $19.11–$24.00 range?
Starting wage is determined based on relevant experience, skills, and certifications. Entry-level candidates with no livestock experience typically start at $19.11/hour. Candidates with 1-2 years of swine experience may start at $20.50–$22.00/hour. Highly experienced herdspersons with specialized skills such as AI certification or farrowing expertise can start at $24.00/hour. All workers receive wage reviews at 6 months, 12 months, and annually thereafter with opportunities for increases based on performance and skill development.
How long does the hiring and LMIA process take?
For Canadian residents, hiring takes 1-2 weeks from application to job offer. For international candidates, the timeline is approximately 8-12 weeks: 1-2 weeks for interviews, 4-6 weeks for LMIA processing by ESDC, and 2-4 weeks for work permit processing by IRCC. We maintain regular communication with all applicants and provide updates at every stage. Applying early is strongly recommended as LMIA processing times can vary.
Are there opportunities for career advancement?
Yes, significant advancement opportunities exist. Entry-level herdspersons can progress to Senior Herdsperson, Barn Lead, Assistant Barn Manager, and Barn Manager positions. We also support specialization in areas such as breeding management, nursery operations, or health coordination. Returning workers and those who demonstrate leadership potential receive priority for promotions. Professional development funding is available for courses and certifications that enhance your career prospects.
