Job Description

As a General Farm Worker – Harvesting at Sewa Enterprise Ltd., you will play a vital role in our seasonal production cycle, working across both greenhouse and field environments to harvest, handle, and prepare crops for market distribution. This is a hands-on, physically active position that places you at the centre of our farm’s daily operations. You will work under the supervision of experienced farm managers and greenhouse supervisors who will provide ongoing training and support.

Your work will involve a mix of greenhouse duties, including tending to hydroponic and soil-grown vegetable crops, and field harvesting activities during peak outdoor growing seasons. The role requires attention to detail, as produce quality directly impacts our reputation with buyers and consumers. You will learn proper harvesting techniques, quality grading standards, and safe handling procedures for delicate fresh produce.

This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with plants, prefer active outdoor and indoor work environments, and want to contribute to British Columbia’s local food system. Whether you are a resident of Metro Vancouver seeking seasonal employment or an international worker looking to gain Canadian agricultural experience, Sewa Enterprise Ltd. offers a welcoming workplace with fair compensation and genuine growth opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is previous farm or greenhouse experience necessary?
No previous experience is required. Sewa Enterprise Ltd. provides thorough on-the-job training for all new General Farm Workers. Our experienced supervisors teach proper harvesting methods, plant care techniques, and food safety protocols. Many of our longest-serving employees started with no agricultural background and built successful careers through our training programs.
Can workers from outside Canada apply?
Yes, international workers are welcome. We participate in Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and hold a valid Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). We provide full support for work permit applications, including necessary employer documentation and guidance through the immigration process. Candidates must have a valid passport and meet Canadian immigration requirements.
What type of housing is available?
We assist workers in finding affordable shared accommodation near the farm, typically within a 15-minute commute. Housing options include shared houses or apartments with furnished bedrooms, shared kitchen and bathroom facilities, laundry access, and Wi-Fi. Rental costs are subsidized for full-season workers and deducted from wages. We can also provide guidance for workers who prefer to arrange their own housing in Surrey.
What are the typical working hours?
Standard shifts run from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with possible Saturday work during peak harvest periods. Workers typically complete 40-50 hours per week. Greenhouse operations may include split shifts during summer heat. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular rate for all hours beyond 40 per week. Schedules are posted weekly in advance.
What crops will I be working with?
Workers will handle a variety of crops depending on the season. Greenhouse crops include tomatoes (beefsteak, cherry, grape), bell peppers, cucumbers, and leafy greens grown year-round. Field crops vary seasonally and may include squash, pumpkins, corn, beans, peas, and berries. This variety keeps the work interesting and helps workers develop diverse agricultural skills.
Is the work physically demanding?
Yes, farm work is physically active and requires good stamina. Tasks involve standing for extended periods, bending, reaching, lifting up to 25 kg, and working in warm greenhouse conditions. However, the work is paced reasonably with regular rest breaks, and workers build fitness gradually. We accommodate workers with medical restrictions where possible and prioritize safety and worker wellbeing.
How long does the hiring process take?
For Canadian residents, expect 1-2 weeks from application to job offer. For international applicants, the timeline extends to 4-8 weeks to accommodate LMIA verification, work permit processing by IRCC, and travel arrangements. We communicate regularly with all applicants and provide updates at every stage of the process.
Are there opportunities to return for future seasons?
Absolutely. We highly value returning workers and offer them priority rehiring each season. Returning workers benefit from higher starting wages, opportunities for promotion to crew leader or equipment operator roles, and deeper involvement in farm operations. Many of our supervisory staff began as General Farm Workers and advanced through dedication and strong performance.
What is there to do in Surrey during time off?
Surrey offers excellent recreational options including over 600 parks, the beautiful Surrey Bend Regional Park, hiking trails at Tynehead Park, and the Historic Stewart Farm. The city has diverse dining, shopping at Guildford Town Centre and Central City, cultural festivals, and sports facilities.
