Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous experience with pigs to apply?
No, previous experience is not required. Pigco provides comprehensive on-the-job training for all new hires. We value dedication, reliability, and a genuine interest in animal care more than prior experience. Many of our best workers started with no livestock background.
What does working in a hog barn smell like?
Swine barns have a distinct odour due to animal waste and ammonia. While modern ventilation systems significantly reduce this, workers should be prepared for strong smells. Most workers adapt within a few weeks. We provide proper protective equipment and maintain strict cleaning schedules to minimize odour exposure.
What is the typical work schedule?
Farm Workers, Hogs typically work 40 hours per week, with schedules varying by production cycle. During farrowing season (when sows give birth), early morning checks and occasional weekend work may be required. Daily tasks include morning feeding, health checks, pen cleaning, and afternoon feeding. Advance notice is provided for any schedule changes.
What are the phases of hog production?
Hog production has four main phases: Breeding/Gestation (mating and pregnancy), Farrowing (birth and nursing), Nursery (weaned piglets growing to 25 kg), and Finishing (growing to market weight of 110–130 kg). At Pigco, workers may gain experience across all phases, providing comprehensive knowledge of the complete swine production cycle.
Why is bio-security so important?
Bio-security prevents the introduction and spread of diseases that could devastate the herd and the Canadian pork industry. Diseases like African Swine Fever (ASF) and Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) can cause massive losses. Our strict protocols including shower-in/shower-out, dedicated clothing, and controlled access protect our animals, our workers, and the broader agricultural community.
Can this job lead to advancement?
Yes. With experience, hog farm workers can progress to specialized roles such as breeding technician, farrowing attendant, herd health monitor, or farm supervisor (NOC 82030). Pigco promotes from within and supports employees who wish to pursue additional agricultural training or certifications such as the Ontario Pork industry courses.
What physical demands should I expect?
This role requires lifting up to 50 lbs (feed bags, piglets), standing for 8+ hours, walking on concrete floors, bending, kneeling, and working in warm, humid conditions (barns are kept at 20–25°C for pig comfort). You must be comfortable working around large animals — mature sows can weigh 250–300 kg. Good physical fitness and stamina are essential.
Are international workers eligible to apply?
Yes, international workers with valid Canadian work permits or those eligible through programs like the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) Agricultural Stream are welcome to apply. Swine is listed on Canada’s National Commodity List, qualifying for primary agriculture exemptions. You must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
