Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous fruit picking or farm experience to apply?
No prior experience is required. Daljit Gill Hardial Gill provides comprehensive hands-on training for all new hires, regardless of background. Our experienced supervisors teach proper picking techniques, ladder safety, fruit handling, and quality standards. Many of our best workers started with zero agricultural experience. What matters most is your enthusiasm, reliability, and willingness to learn.
Can international workers from outside Canada apply for this job?
Yes, international workers are strongly encouraged to apply. We actively recruit through Canada’s Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) and Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). We hold a valid Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and provide full support for work permit applications, including necessary documentation, guidance on immigration procedures, and assistance with travel arrangements. Workers from Mexico, Jamaica, and other participating countries are welcome.
What type of accommodation is provided for workers?
We offer clean, furnished shared housing located on or very near the farm property. Accommodation typically includes shared bedrooms (2-4 persons per room), a fully equipped communal kitchen, bathroom facilities, laundry machines, Wi-Fi access, and comfortable common areas for relaxation. Housing is available at highly subsidized rates deducted from wages. Private room options may be available for returning workers or those with special circumstances.
What does a typical workday look like for a fruit farm worker?
A typical workday begins between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM to take advantage of cooler morning temperatures. Workers receive a daily briefing on harvest targets and orchard assignments. The day involves hand-picking fruits, climbing ladders, sorting produce into bins, and maintaining clean work areas. Lunch breaks are 30-60 minutes. Work generally concludes between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM, though hours may extend during peak harvest periods. Total weekly hours range from 40 to 55 depending on crop readiness and weather conditions.
What fruits will I be harvesting during the season?
Our harvest calendar spans multiple fruit varieties throughout the season. July focuses on cherries and early apricots. August brings peaches, plums, and blueberries. September is peak apple and pear season, alongside raspberries and late-season strawberries. October wraps up with late apple varieties and final berry harvests. Workers may rotate between crops or specialize in one type depending on timing and preference.
Is the work physically demanding?
Yes, fruit farm work is physically active and requires good stamina. Tasks involve standing for long periods, bending and reaching, climbing ladders, carrying filled picking bags (up to 25 kg), and working in outdoor conditions. However, workers naturally build strength and endurance over the first few weeks. We encourage regular breaks, provide ample hydration, and schedule work during cooler hours to minimize physical strain. Workers with health concerns should discuss accommodations with supervisors.
How long does the entire hiring process take?
For Canadian residents, the process typically takes 1-2 weeks from application to job offer. For international workers, the timeline is approximately 4-8 weeks, accounting for LMIA verification, work permit processing by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and travel arrangements. We begin reviewing applications immediately upon receipt and maintain regular communication with all candidates throughout the process.
Are there opportunities for advancement or returning next season?
Absolutely. Many of our supervisors, crew leaders, and equipment operators began as general fruit farm workers. Returning workers who demonstrate reliability, leadership potential, and strong performance are regularly promoted to higher-paying roles with greater responsibility. We value loyalty and actively recruit returning workers each season, offering them priority placement, increased wages, and mentorship opportunities for new arrivals.
What recreational activities are available in the Kelowna area?
The Okanagan Valley offers incredible recreational opportunities. Workers enjoy swimming and boating on Okanagan Lake, hiking and cycling on world-class trails including Myra Canyon Trestles, wine tasting tours at nearby vineyards, beach visits at Gyro Beach and Boyce-Gyro Beach Park, fishing in local lakes and rivers, and exploring the vibrant Kelowna downtown with its shops, restaurants, and cultural events. We also organize group outings and community gatherings for our workers throughout the season.
