Job Description

As a Beef Cattle Herdsperson at Kasko Cattle Company Ltd., you will play a central role in the daily operations of our cow-calf and backgrounding enterprise. This is a hands-on, outdoor position that places you at the heart of authentic Canadian ranch life. You will work across our expansive prairie pastures and modern corral facilities, caring for cattle at every stage from newborn calves to finished feeders. The work is physically active, mentally engaging, and deeply rewarding for those who love working with livestock.

Your responsibilities will span the full spectrum of beef cattle management including herd monitoring, calving assistance, feeding, health treatments, pasture rotation, fencing, and record keeping. You will operate tractors, ATVs, and handling equipment while working closely with our Ranch Manager and consulting veterinarians. The position requires flexibility, as ranch work follows the rhythms of nature and the needs of the herd rather than a strict clock.

This role is ideal for individuals with cattle experience who seek a stable, long-term position in a genuine ranch environment. Whether you are an Alberta local with a background in agriculture or an international worker seeking to build a career in Canadian cattle ranching, Kasko Cattle Company offers competitive pay, free housing, and the opportunity to become part of a respected family operation in one of the world’s great cattle-producing regions.

  • Fencing & Infrastructure: Build, repair, and maintain barbed wire, electric, and portable fencing across pastures; maintain water systems, corrals, and handling facilities

Frequently Asked Questions

How much cattle experience do I need to apply?
We prefer candidates with 1-2 years of hands-on beef cattle experience, but we will consider motivated individuals with less experience who demonstrate genuine interest and aptitude for ranch work. During the farm visit interview, we assess practical skills including cattle handling, equipment operation, and overall ranch readiness. Candidates with dairy, sheep, or horse experience may also be considered if they show transferable skills and a strong willingness to learn.
Can international workers apply for this position?
Yes, international workers are welcome. Kasko Cattle Company Ltd. holds a valid LMIA and participates in Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program. We have successfully sponsored herdspersons from Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Europe. We provide complete immigration support including LMIA documentation, work permit application guidance, and assistance with travel and settlement. Candidates must have a valid passport and meet Canadian immigration requirements.
What is the on-farm accommodation like?
We provide free, comfortable on-farm housing in a modern ranch residence or private cabin. Each herdsperson receives a private furnished bedroom with access to shared kitchen facilities, bathrooms, laundry, and living areas. The housing includes heating, air conditioning, high-speed internet, and satellite TV. Utilities are fully covered by the employer. The accommodation is located on the ranch property, providing immediate access to the cattle and eliminating commute time. Meals are self-prepared, though we often share group dinners and BBQs as a ranch team.
What does a typical workday look like?
A typical day starts with morning pasture checks at sunrise to ensure all cattle are accounted for and healthy. This is followed by feeding, fence checks, and any scheduled processing work such as vaccinations or weighing. Afternoons involve pasture moves, equipment maintenance, hay handling, or infrastructure projects. Evening checks confirm cattle are settled for the night. During calving season, night checks rotate among team members. The schedule varies seasonally, with longer hours during calving, branding, and weaning, and more predictable routines during summer grazing.
Is horseback riding required for this job?
Horseback riding is preferred but not mandatory. We use both horses and ATVs for pasture work and cattle gathering. If you are comfortable riding, you will have opportunities to work from horseback, which is often the most effective way to move cattle across our large pastures. If you do not ride, you can perform most duties using ATVs and vehicles. We do have ranch horses available and can provide riding instruction for motivated employees who wish to develop this skill.
What machinery will I operate?
Herdspersons operate a variety of equipment including tractors with loaders, hay balers, feed trucks, ATVs, stock trailers, and handling equipment such as squeeze chutes and calf tables. We provide thorough training on all ranch-specific machinery. A valid driver’s license is required, and experience with heavy equipment is a significant advantage. We prioritize safety and ensure all operators are competent before working independently with machinery.
How long does the hiring process take?
For Canadian residents, the process takes 2-3 weeks from application to job offer. For international candidates, expect 6-10 weeks to accommodate LMIA verification, work permit processing by IRCC, and travel arrangements. We communicate regularly with all applicants and provide updates at every stage. We understand the urgency of filling ranch positions and work diligently to move qualified candidates through the process efficiently.
Are there opportunities for career advancement?
Absolutely. We believe in promoting from within. Herdspersons who demonstrate leadership, initiative, and strong performance can advance to Senior Herdsperson, Assistant Ranch Manager, and Ranch Manager roles. We also support specialization in areas such as breeding programs, feedlot management, or direct marketing. Returning workers and long-term employees receive priority for promotions and are encouraged to take ownership of specific aspects of the ranch operation.
What is the weather like in Coaldale?
Coaldale enjoys a semi-arid continental climate with more annual sunshine hours than any other major Canadian city. Summers are warm and dry with temperatures reaching 25-35 degrees Celsius, perfect for outdoor ranch work. Winters are milder than much of Alberta due to frequent Chinook winds, though temperatures can drop to -20 degrees Celsius during cold snaps. The dry climate means less mud and easier working conditions compared to wetter regions. We provide appropriate cold-weather gear and adjust work schedules during extreme weather events to ensure worker safety and comfort.
