Dolphine Mongina

A Geomatics Engineer with a specialty in GIS Analysis

  • November 21, 2022

Dolphine Mongina is a Location Analyst Executive at Dalberg Research. In her current role, she oversees the technical documentation of all LOCAN’s processes and the expansion of the LOCAN database to address client needs.

With more than 3 years of experience in geospatial and statistical analysis, she has become an expert in the application of Geospatial Information Systems and Remote Sensing to address challenges in multiple sectors such as health, energy, environment, climate, agriculture, and finance. She has also worked on developing the award-winning vulnerability index which has been crucial in epidemiology to identify locations most at risk of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic for economic recovery plans. The concept of the index has further been applied in various dimensions more specifically in the economic context where it was used to identify locations where the youths would be most affected by unemployment.

She has a keen interest in the use of cutting-edge technology to mitigate the negative effects of climate change which is a major threat to the agricultural sector in developing countries and has been part of projects aimed at exploring various solution pathways to carbon sequestration. She has also led strategic conversations with key company stalk holders on how best to reduce their carbon emissions while still maintaining the profit margins.

She also supported the United Nations Development Organisation (UNIDO) in conducting a feasibility study and value chain assessment of green hydrogen production in Africa and prepared a business case for select countries. The study included research on green hydrogen production, the transportation and distribution modalities, as well as the downstream applications for both local and overseas markets. She led the team in conducting secondary analysis on port access and renewable energy potential, and investment risks, provided crucial numbers for an excel model to calculate the Levelized cost of hydrogen and ammonia at different points of the value chain, and provided coordinates that facilitated site visits in Kenya and Djibouti to further assess the potential of identified locations for green hydrogen and renewable energy production. Key findings from the feasibility study were then synthesized to provide recommendations on the locations for hydrogen and renewable energy production in Kenya and Djibouti, as well as outlining the potential downstream uses of hydrogen locally and in overseas markets.

Dolphine holds a Bachelor of Science in Geomatics Engineering and Geospatial Information Systems from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and is currently pursuing her master's in Geospatial Information Systems and Remote Sensing at JKUAT. She is an active member of the Gender, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee, the Agriculture and Food Security practice area, and Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Education

Master's in GIS and Remote Sensing @ Jomo Kenyatta Unversity of Agriculture and Technology
Sep 2021 — Current

An advanced degree in GIS and Remote Sensing with a practical approach to emerging trends in GIS analysis such as machine learning techniques as well as advanced engineering survey techniques, project management tasks and advanced project budgeting

Bachelors in Geomatics Engineering and Geospatial Information Systems @ Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
Sep 2014 — Aug 2019

The degree equipped me with skills in GIS, remote sensing, and programming using languages such as C++. JAVA, R, and Python. I also learned how to use both open-source and commercial software such as ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, ERDAS Imagine, etc. I also acquired skills in engineering survey

Experience

Location Analytics Executive @ Dalberg Research
Jan 2021 — Current

In this role, I am responsible for the documentation of all technical tasks within the department, automation of repetitive tasks within the department, server maintenance, and configuration to support applications for remote access and leading various projects that will address various client needs

Junior Location Analyst Executive @ Dalberg Research
Jul 2019 — Dec 2020

Developed and deployed Malawi Land Based Investment Tool, an interactive web-based shiny application featuring socio-economic aspects of Malawi under various use cases. The aim was to aid investors in identification of ideal locations for growing Tea and Cranberry. The Eco-Crop model was used to generate the suitability grids which were then integrated with location and socioeconomic data and stored on the PostgreSQL database. Maps on socioeconomic attributes such as population employment status were stored in Geoserver. The user selections were incorporated into the SQL to filter for user defined specifications for mapping visualization using leaflets and graphs by use of plotly and highcharter libraries. We used bitbucket for version control and deployed the application on our Digital Ocean Servers for remote access.
Other general tasks include writing scripts to automate geocoding tasks by the use of the google maps Geocoding API, mining thematic data on Twitter for analysis, and maintenance of the Catalogue Query Application, which aids users to navigate through our data catalog.

Intern @ Dalberg Research
Sep 2018 — Nov 2018

I worked on various project including Support a low-cost healthcare network determine expansion options in South Africa. I used GIS spatial analyst tools together with population infrastructure and health facilities data to generate the accessibility ratio that indicated areas that were underserved and overserved by the then healthcare outlet
YESOMAR (Young European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research), MSRA Marketing and Social Research Association) and ALN (Africa Legal Network) presentation and training on unmasking the locations of the bottom of the pyramid (BOP) economy.
