Frequently Asked Questions

What is an LMIA and how does it help me work in Canada?
A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that a Canadian employer must obtain to hire a foreign worker when no Canadian citizen or permanent resident is available for the job. Once Brar Brothers Farming receives a positive LMIA, you can use it to apply for a Canadian work permit through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
How long does the LMIA process take?
LMIA processing typically takes 12 to 14 weeks from the time the employer submits the application. For the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP), applications should be submitted 12–14 weeks before the expected worker arrival date. We recommend applying as early as possible to ensure timely processing.
Do I need previous farm experience to apply?
No, previous farm experience is not required. Brar Brothers Farming provides comprehensive on-the-job training for all new hires. We value a strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn more than prior experience. Many of our most successful workers started with no agricultural background.
What is the typical work schedule?
Farm Workers typically work 40 hours per week, Monday through Saturday, with hours varying based on seasonal demands. During peak harvest seasons (June–September), additional overtime hours may be available at 1.5x the regular rate. Early morning starts are common to avoid midday heat.
Is housing provided for farm workers?
Subsidized housing assistance is available for workers who relocate to Kelowna, particularly for international workers arriving through the LMIA process. This may include shared accommodations near the farm at a reduced cost. Please inquire during your application for specific availability and arrangements.
Can this job lead to permanent residency in Canada?
Yes. Canadian work experience gained through the TFWP can support future immigration applications. Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for pathways such as the Express Entry system, BC Provincial Nominee Program, or agricultural-specific streams. We recommend consulting a licensed immigration consultant for personalized advice.
What crops will I be working with?
Our primary crops include cherries, peaches, and apples — the signature fruits of the Okanagan Valley. Workers may also assist with seasonal vegetables and cover crops depending on the time of year. Each crop has specific harvesting windows, providing diverse experience throughout the season.
What documents do I need to apply as an international worker?
International applicants should prepare: a valid passport (minimum 6 months validity), updated resume/CV highlighting any manual labour experience, police clearance certificate, medical exam results (if required for your country), and proof of English language ability. Once LMIA is approved, you will need these documents to apply for your work permit.
